About Domestic Violence
Intimate partner violence (IPV), commonly known as domestic violence refers to the consistent forms of harm caused by a former or current intimate partner, spouse or common law partner. This usually entails a pattern of behaviour by one partner that is used to gain or sustain control over the other partner within a romantic relationship.
Domestic abuse can take the form of physical harm, stalking (criminal harassment), sexual violence, emotional damage, economic abuse, spiritual harm, online hate, and more. Regardless of marital status, gender, sexual orientation, and living situation, domestic violence can occur to anyone, anywhere.
Protection from the Law
The Criminal Code of Canada strictly prohibits domestic violence with an emphasis on physical/sexual harm, emotional exploitation and financial abuse.
Domestic violence is complex and oftentimes does not lead to a single solution. Within the Criminal Code of Canada, many charges are listed to prosecute offences frequently involved in many domestic violence cases. These charges include assault, kidnapping, trafficking, sexual assault, pornography, and homicide.
Many victims of domestic abuse feel fear for their safety around their partner and continue to struggle with the repercussions of their partner’s actions as it affects the victim’s family (especially children), financials and well-being.
